| Abstract (Englisch): | The function of syllables in reading is discussed in reading didactics within the framework of different theoretical approaches – either with a stronger focus on reading psychology or with a stronger linguistic basis. In the instruction of beginners, it is very common to mark the syllable graphically as a structuring aid to make it easier for beginner readers to make the leap from synthesizing the individual letters to reading the word – by using gaps or hyphens between the syllables, or by changing the color. Overall, the results of our own study, as well as other studies, argue against the practice of consistently marking the syllabic structure of words with color. Based on the reported findings, we advocate making a differentiated repertoire of structuring aids available in early lessons and in support programs. Graphic aids for syllabic segmentation should only be used selectively: for individual children (or groups of children) and even then only in certain phases (transition from sounding out words to reading words fluently) and in general only for words with three or more syllables. Digital texts that offer flexible format changes provide simple options for individual adaptation. (Author) |
