| Abstract (English): | The GDR has repeatedly been a contested frame of reference in national social debates. It shows how contemporary historical events reach into the present and are used to clarify complex social contexts. In the context of historical-political learning in general studies in primary education, contemporary history is considered to have special potential. This raises the question of the extent to which primary school children perceive and interpret the history of the GDR and the associated history of German division. Previous studies on contemporary history from the perspective of primary school children have focussed on National Socialism, while the period after 1945 has hardly been taken into consideration. The qualitative study presented here addresses this research gap and examines the perspectives of primary school children on the history of the GDR and the division of Germany. The article presents the theoretical and methodological structure of the study as well as the central findings and discusses them with regard to possible learning from the past. (DIPF/Orig.) |
