| Abstract (English): | Primary education in Austria provides an important foundation for children's academic and social-emotional development, as well as their later school careers. Therefore, primary school teachers are tasked with successfully managing the transition from kindergarten to primary school. At the same time, primary school staff bear the responsibility of supporting children's development through stimulating teaching to ensure that, during their four years of primary school, children receive an education that prepares them for the transition to secondary school. For this reason, it is essential to structure primary school teacher training at Austrian university colleges of teacher education in such a way that teachers are optimally prepared for the abovementioned future tasks. Accordingly, this paper explores the structural and institutional conditions that shape both primary school teaching and the education of future primary school teachers. It also aims to highlight challenges and future perspectives for teacher education in Austria, including the current teacher shortage, early selection at the end of fourth grade, and the recruitment of qualified staff at university colleges of teacher education.
