| Abstract (German): | Universitäten als raumgewordene Institutionen zu begreifen, ist keine Selbstverständlichkeit, sondern das Ergebnis eines langen historischen Prozesses. Das Sesshaftwerden des privilegierten Personenverbands in den Städten Europas vollzog sich über Jahrhunderte und machte durch diese Aneignung aus unterschiedlichen Orten akademische Wissens- und Freiräume. Ob Hörsaal, Büro oder botanischer Garten,– an der Genese universitärer Räume lässt sich die Entwicklung akademischer Wissenschaftskultur ebenso ablesen wie die Entwicklungen der von Professorenschaft und Studierenden geschaffenen sozialen Räume. So waren die Freiräume der Universitäten nie frei von Konflikten. Von der räumlichen Symbolisierung von Statusdifferenzen bis zur disziplinarischen Wirkung von Raumordnungen erweist sich der universitäre Raum bis heute als Gegenstand sozialer Aushandlungsprozesse |
| Abstract (English): | To conceive of university as a spatial institution, as a proper place for the learned, is not self-evident. It is the achievement of a long historical process resulting in the spatial settlement of a privileged community of scholars and students. By appropriating different places in cities all over Europe, academics created spaces of knowledge, separated from their social environment by privileges and rules of their own. No matter whether lecture room, office, or botanic garden – in the development of academic spaces we can trace the history of knowledge cultures as well as the social space created by professors and students. But academic space as a realm of academic freedom has never existed without conflict. From spatial symbolizations of hierarchy to the disciplinary regimes of spatial orders, academic space remains an object of social negotiation until today. |
