(DIPF/paul)
Abstract (English):In this article the situation of ethnic schooling in Czechoslovakia is described. Despite the enormous changes this country was confronted with, there is a certain continuity as far as the rationale of minority schooling is concerned. This, probably, has to do with a specific historical context and experiences which contributed in forming a certain type of handling multiethnicity. This type emerged in multiethnic states like the Habsburg Empire. Though, often enough, in it ethnical schooling was not always supported willingly, or even was blocked, it was principally acknowledged as a legitimate part of the social legal structure. In contrast both to predominantly assimilative systems and to predominantly multicultural systems this type tries, as far as the ethnical situation is concerned, to use education not for change, but for the stabilization of the status quo.
