Abstract (English):Focusing on teachers’ perspectives on music theory as practice, the author from Germany reconstructs their notions about teaching music theory. In a grounded theory interview study, he carves out how “doing music theory” means theory becoming “practical” in the eyes of the teachers. The chapter opens up a field of discussion by emphasising that teachers often refer to rather distinct notions of what they mean by practice – i. e. primarily positively or negatively related in juxtaposition to theory. This article is part of the anthology European Perspectives on Music Education, Volume 11, which focusses on music practices in the classroom, diversity in music making, learning and teaching and praxeological perspectives on music education.
