| Abstract (English): | A reflection on the nature of biology education research has the potential to analyze the historical developments of the discipline and anticipate future trends. The Family Resemblance Approach (FRA), structured into a cognitive-epistemic and a social-institutional dimension, appears particularly suitable for such a reflection. This contribution summarizes the discussions from a roundtable on using the FRA as a reflective framework for the nature of biology education research. The roundtable was organized as a World Café with three tables. The discussions revealed that reaching a consensual description of the identity of biology education research is difficult due to the diversity of its research fields and reference disciplines (Table 1). Teacher trainees or educators were frequently mentioned as the primary target audience for communication about biology education research, with a particular emphasis on highlighting the relevance of biology education research to them (Table 2). In the discussion about the social-institutional characteristics and tasks of biology education researchers, particularly application-oriented activities (e.g., work on curricula) were identified, which have received little attention so far (Table 3). There was uncertainty regarding the distinction from other subject didactics, and systematic empirical investigations were considered useful to further sharpen the scientific profile of biology education research.
