(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):Student progress monitoring is an important prerequisite for adaptive teaching in highly diverse secondary classrooms. To date, most of the techniques and progress monitoring measures focus primary education learning goals such as basic computation skills or reading fluency. This study aims at investigating if a progress monitoring system, based on the concept of mastery measurement, helps teachers in German secondary classrooms to adapt instruction in the field of German grammar and spelling. We therefore developed a Moodle course with different learning content modules, each of them comprising formative mastery tests for progress monitoring, glossaries and adaptive assignments. We sampled 34 secondary teachers and 820 students who worked with the Moodle course during several months. Moodle test point and assignment scores, glossary clicks and final questionnaire data were analyzed. Learning gains can be explained with a systematic use of adaptive assignments and glossaries. However, results also revealed inefficient patterns of usage, either depending on the course materials or school-side implementation problems. Evaluation data were used to improve the progress monitoring system. (DIPF/Orig.)
