Abstract (English): | The article deals with how a civil rights-oriented understanding of intellectual disability is compatible with the fact that many persons associated with that label often have persistent needs for social and educational support. These connections are discussed in the professional context of a residential home. This article attempts to understand the everyday routines practiced with paradigmatic and organizational explanatory approaches. It argues that traditional approaches to assistance promote conceptual assumptions according to which institutions are supposed to form ‘sanctuaries’ for those cared for in them. In contrast, inclusion-oriented forms of assistance are based on the assumption that successful personality development is directly linked to overcoming crises and risks, which makes access to everyday risks virtually necessary.
